Anyone happen to know if a thermostat from a 2.9L is interchangeable with a Ford 3.8L?

Was there ever an explorer that had the dana 28 components inside a dana 35 housing, such as the 93-97 ranger may have had? In other words, if I had an explorer, could I be sure it really had a dana 35, or is it possible it's actually a dana 28? Thanks, Cody
