Why hate the 3.0? The biggest problems with 3.0's are they aren't driven properly, have an auto behind them, or very poorly geared. It's a very good reliable engine.

Now, I DO understand about wanting the low end torque of the 4.0. I myself am starting to look into it. I see that you are in a far better posistion than me. You can use any of the 95-97 engines. You'll basically need to transplant everything from the other vehicle to yours:

Motor, Wiring, Radiator, ECU, Starter, Intake, Tranny, Motor Mounts, Exhaust all the way to the Cat.....etc, etc.

I used to be very biased towards the "underdog" engines. Now I just need a "bigger" engine to do the pulling, off-roading, gerneral work, and :3gears:.

Good luck to you.

Now, I DO understand about wanting the low end torque of the 4.0

the 4.0
220 @ 2400 RPM (1990 - 2000)
238 @ 3000 RPM (2001 - 2007)

the 3.0
165 @ 3600 RPM (1991 - 1995)
162 @ 3250 RPM (1996 - 1997)
178 @ 3750 RPM (1999)
190 @ 3650 RPM (2000 - 2001)
180 @ 3500 RPM (2002)
180 @ 3900 RPM (2003 - 2004)
180 @ 3950 RPM (2005 - 2007)

maybe less downshifting. and ya dont have to rev the shit out it to make it go.

Whoa.....I wasn't saying not to go with the 4.0, I am myself....

Most people don't understand that reving up a 3.0 is the way to drive it and actually gets better MPG, etc at higher rpms. Ford also should have geared them low from the factory. This pisses alot of people off, they want it down low, where it should be on a truck.

I'm just saying, the 3.0 isn't a POS engine, it has it's place......the 4.0 would be a good choice for a truck, especially when it comes to towing.

That's the thing, it's a 3.0, it doen't have it down low. That's why you gotta rev it a lil more. If it runs fine, why replace it?

That 3.0 will last you forever...If it runs, I say keep it. Is the expense of doing a motor swap worth the extra 1000 rpm that you don't have rev to?

Have you priced out everything for your swap? A Motor, Tranny and everything to make it run gets expensive...

i will admit a 3.0 is a good runnin engine, but not enough down low. I have one currently ad am going to undergo the 4.0 swap, i actually bought the whole truck for 300 bucks. 4.0 5 spd 4x4 reg cab long bed. frame is junk but motor runs good, has i think 174thousand on the motor but i'am not sure because the title has diff milage wrote down on it so who knows for sure, but it doesnt leak or burn any oil so i think i'm gonna be safe for a little while. But yeah you can easily find a junk ranger with a good drivetrain for cheap, look at what i did lol. You will need all of the above motor, trans, mounts etc.

I say just do the swap. You won't be happy with the 3.0 (unless you regear it really low) while towing.
