Probably going to have to leave it attached the flexplate when you pull the motor out.

My credo
Toonces drives a Ranger . . . . just not very well.
If it has the correct engine-to-transmission separator plate there should be a small access plate to get to the TC nuts.

Otherwise, pull the starter, work through the starter hole.

Edit: if the motor's locked, then yes, you'll need to pull the TC on the flexplate.

+1 on "pull the engine out with torque converter attached"
Nothing holds the torque converter to transmission, it slides in and slides off

You NEVER want to install engine with torque converter attached as that WILL cause transmission damage, but it will not hurt transmission to pull torque converter out while attached to engine

It will make a big mess as fluid comes out of torque converter, so heads up
You can pull the transmission back and out first to try and catch some of the fluid, and maybe get to the bolts to remove torque converter

OR

Pull the engine and transmission out at the same time(remove transfer case), you will still get a bit of a mess as trans fluid flows out tail shaft but not near as bad as torque converter at that angle, lol

You will need a lot of forward room in front of the engine to pull it apart the with the torque convertor still attached.

I can't find an access plate to get to the TC as I'm trying to remove blown 4.0 OHV; and working through the starter hole sucks. Maybe I have to remove the oil pan...

Really not looking forward to reassembly.

Not sure if that would get you in a better place
Still have to turn the engine to access the 4 nuts or bolts
Starter motor hole what is used on most engines

But as said, you can pull the engine with torque converter still attached, just can't put it back in that way

If you're pulling the motor, I'd recommend pulling the TC after the motor is out of the vehicle. I pulled a 4.0 OHV out of a '92 Explorer about a week ago, with the TC still bolted on. I had the radiator out, but nothing else forward of that point. It was snug getting out, but not difficult.
