I'm wondering if anybody makes checklists such as for pulling motors, etc etc.

Anybody got one for the 4.0, both Explorer and Ranger?

If not I guess I'll start my own, I'm getting fairly close on both of them
I may have already done more things wrong than they needed

Toonces drives a Ranger . . . . just not very well.
A Chilton or a Haynes usually has a step-by-step for engine removal, which would at least give you a good starting point.

Perfectly normal. We do that to sharpen our skills. (y)

Pretty sure the procedure for pulling an engine in one of those is:

"best left to a certified professional"

Seemed like everything I really needed to know how to do was above my pay grade with those things lol.

I had a heck of a checklist but I what I was pulling out wasn't the same as what I was putting back in either.

Right now I have a checklist running for the TRS gathering this fall...

Deengineer until it is how Blue Oval should have sold it!!
@Josh B ,
The big decision is whether you want/need to pull the engine and transmission together or just the engine. It is more work to pull both together...but it's easier, it also makes disconnecting them easier.

PULLING AN OHV 4.0,
• disconnect the battery, both leads
• unbolt the "Y" pipe from the exhaust manifolds
• carefully unplug the engine bay wire harness
• depressurize the fuel system and fuel rail
• unplug the fuel lines from the fuel rail
• disconnect air inlet ducting
• disconnect all vacuum lines from engine
• disconnect throttle linkage
• drain coolant and remove the radiator
By now the "decision" should've been made, regarding engine or engine and transmission; I will describe engine only,
• disconnect starter wire and ground and remains engine grounds
• unbolt bell housing from engine
• unbolt motor mounts
• remove hood

Yeah, the aftermarket repair manuals can be hit-or-miss, but sometimes they're helpful. One example is, the Ford manual will say "use Ford tool no. XYZ" and an aftermarket manual for same thing will say "use an 8" gear puller".

Anyway, this is the 4.0 R&R procedure from a 1983-90 Chiltons, so it should be somewhat close to pulling one from a '93.

If you pull the trans with the engine remove the torque converter nuts beforehand. It is a PITA to chase it around on the floor trying to get them off after the fact.

I am kind of undecided if it is really much easier to pull as an assembly, it was nip and tuck on mine and it had a bodylift... but a new truck doesn't have a radius arm crossmember to dodge.

Also with the trans... when it is tipped up, it will dump fluid out of every orifice it can find. Dipstick, vent, out the back if it is 4wd etc and it makes a huge mess.

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
I sometimes have checklists to keep track of my. Checklists. But I don’t have any for that job. A lot of times, I can sit down with a pad and paper and think my way through the job. I usually try to do this far enough in advance that I can keep thinking about it for a few days and refine the original notes to become more thorough.

Thanks fellas, that's about what I was hoping for. I have books and CDs, I have the 93 CD for all Fords 93/94, but today I came to use it and the old computer I have for stuff like that couldn't load it, the CD/DVD player was gone bad and I had to go looking to scavenge one of those, almost 2 hours before I finally got to look on the CD (it was released before windows 95 had even been heard of), and frankly, what it shows mine to be is not what mine is (talking about the heating/cooling contraption and how to get it out of the way. I'd like to keep the heat but ready to lose the AC ) I know there's supposedly only 6 bolts that holds it in, but I didn't get that far yet, I'm just to the edges of it and not certain whether to proceed in that direction or give a major portion of it the ax

What I'm working with is a 93 Ranger with a 4.0 manual, and a 96 Explorer with a 4.0 and a toasted automatic, I have seen them mention unbolting the Catalytic converter
I am hoping to get each one totally free before preparing the hoist more than necessary, and wonder if it's safe to do it that way, IE teetering on top of the motor mount brackets, or will they just sit there like that? Actually the 93 engine will need removed, with the Ranger pulled under the hoist, then the motor rolled out of the way on a dolly, the Ranger pulled back a ways, the Explorer pulled under the hoist and its engine pulled and left hanging there and the Explorer pulled back and the Ranger pulled under there again and the 96 Engine installed on the 93 Ranger, Simple! :D
I am not considering getting any protruding parts of my body entangled in it.

Also I am aware the 93 Intake manifold will now need to be attached to the 96 to work with the 93 harness, which is a shame because I rebuilt the 96 Intake
