Toonces drives a Ranger . . . . just not very well.
However it’s driving great!
Just leave he distributor where it is.

And . . .

the preformance is great again but i miss those exhaust rumbles.
Knock a hole in the muffler.

In all seriousness, a vacuum gauge is worth it's modest cost, to help dial in the timing "just right". If the motor's running great, roll with it.

Rpm should be 750/800 for an automatic. Slightly lower for a manual. If timing is correct then adjust carb settings. Its been 40 years so memory is suspect.... I'm used to 4bbl carbs.
There is 2 screws at base front of carb, one on each side. Turn those in until noticeable rough running, then turn out until smooth.
Adjust throttle stop screw for proper idle.
Check timing again.

Id set the idle mix screws to base setting.....all the way in to a soft stop, 1.5 turns out....then all the way in for the idle speed screw and 3 turns out....IIRC...atleast on V8's. I assume the 2.8 would be the same.
