The fuel gauge on our Explorer has been acting up for the past month. Upon startup the gauge can fluctuate to from pegging E or pegging F or to the normal gas level. If upon startup the gauge pegs to E or F it will eventually read the proper fuel level in the tank if the trip is long enough. Has anyone had a similar problem? Any help would be appreciated.

What year Explorer do you have? I have an 05 with intermittent readings and CEL (P0463). There is a TSB on its issue for 04 to 07 Explorer and Mountaineers.

Good luck

No problem, hopefully someone will have a suggestion on the 91 and will not be the sending unit.

Good luck

My credo
If you can't go through it or around it, then go over it.
sticking float? I had to replace the guages and the tach and speedo rebuilt in my 91 sploder. they died from old age.

I don't think the float is sticking as the gauge pegs to E or F upon startup and then after a little while driving the gauge will slowly read the proper fuel level. Sometimes it reads the proper fuel level upon startup but it is rare now.
