r12 and r134a sticker on A/C

Alright gents, I have a 1985 BII that someone at some point converted to r134a is my guess because I have a sticker that says either is ok...but the can I bought at autozone doesn't fit right onto the threaded port (on newer car the port is a clip on so to speak).

Anyway, I'm going to assume (REMEMBER I am no mechanical genius but can follow directions) that their is another kind of can with a different screw on port to "re-charge" the system. I understand that if it leaks that this is a $30 waste of money, but I'm going to try anyway...

Your truck was not converted to R134a. Someone at some point replaced the accumulator (the part with the sticker on it.) All accumulators have desiccant in them to absorb moisture. If you read the sticker again, it says the desiccant is compatible with both R12 and R134a. You can replace the accumulator and keep using R12, which is apparently what someone did at some point. The sticker simply says you can use either refrigerant with that accumulator.

The reason the hose won't attach to the service port is because you have an R12 service port. Which is why I said the truck most likely still has R12 in it. If it was already converted to R134a, it would have the adaptor fitting screwed on it.

You need to either refill with R12 or take the time to properly convert the system to R134a.

You would also be pumping refrigerant into the atmosphere - both illegal and not nice for the environment.
