Ok guys, long time no see haha

I have tun into an issue with my girlfriends 01 Explorer Sport , she ran it out of fuel and now the thing wont start, well, wont start on its own , i can get it to run on starting fluid but that is it. It's and 01 Sport with a 4.0 SOHC, we changed the fuel filter (not clean at all) and i checked fuel pressure tonight, was showing ~35 psi while cranking.

I am thinking that the running out of fuel dealt a death blow to the fuel pump , but the haynes manual says that the reading i am getting is normal (I do not trust the Haynes manual, but it is all i have, i no longer work on cars for a living so no longer have access to a SIS)

Any pointers you guys can give me is greatly appreciated, this is going on 3 weeks now and it is really bugging me.

Please clarify one point, you say it will start on starter fluid, does it then continue to run or just until the fluid burns off?

35 psi is about half of what you should have, 60psi IIRC.

To test fuel pressure, turn the key to RUN, but do not crank the starter.
Each time you go from OFF to RUN, the fuel pump should prime for 2 seconds and show a good pressure with negligable drop when priming stops.

Martin - dies when the fluid burns off

Earl - When i turn the key from off to run it goes to about 25-30 psi, if i do it a second time right after it goes up to 50ish

To me it sounds like its one of two things, either the injectors are not firing (listen with a stethyscope) or, they're firing and nothing is coming out.

Yup. What Martin said.
