Anyone ever installed a remote starter?

Vanessa complains about having to go outside in the morning and start her car when it's really cold out. She keeps saying that she'd like to have a remote starter.

I'm sure I could read the directions on how to install one and do it. I was just curious how difficult it is and if there is anything I should be concerned about. Seems to me I knew a woman who had to have hers removed because it wanted to start on it's own sometimes :icon_confused:.

Anyways. Not sure if I'm going to get one. Just thought I'd see what type of feedback/advise I got from people.

It would be going on a '01 Honda Civic.
 
I've done them in my 05 sport trac and just did one in my 91 ranger.

The ranger was easy, took maybe 3 hours start to finish.

The sport trac took about 6 hours as I did door locks and had to bypass the PATS system.

Does the car have factory anti-theft?

Remote starts aren't specific to the vehicle.

Even better...they are a pain in the ass to install in standards
 
ive wondered how those things know when to stop cranking the starter...like what tells the computer for the keyless starter that the engine has started and to let off the starter? rpm signal?
 
The tach signal or if you set it up for tachless is will use voltage sensing.

If you have a neutral switch in the trans, you run the auto setting on the starter , you run your park wire through the neutral switch then through the p-break switch. Double "fail-safe" starting and you don't have to do the dance every time.

Jim a 2001 is not too bad you can find the wire codes online, but you will need a bypass module but it takes about an extra 20 min to install. The problem i keep running into is cars with 2 immobilizers, the OE POS, and our local insurance company makes cretin cars get an aftermarket immobilizer, otherwise they wont cover you.(and they're the ONLY insurance place, yes it is just like communism)

Some starters can be set to just crank for X amount of time(usually 1.5 seconds) and then just assume the car started, and AutoStart has "Virtual Tach System combines the latest microcontroller technology and a complex algorithm that took years to develop. VTS is able to effectively monitor the engine starting sequence and release the starter at the right time without physically connecting the Tach wire to the remote starter. The VTS constantly monitors the data and readjusts itself automatically in order to maximize its capability to start the engine properly in any weather or deteriorating battery condition (automatic transmission only)"

A remote starter is $100 installed - around here, at least. I've had starters installed on 2 vehicles. At that price, it's not worth the trouble of D'ing IY, IMO.

Yeah but most places also charge $100 + cost of module for a bypass, and all newer cars need them. One of there "fun" hidden fees.
 
If you can find a licensed place to install it for that cheap I wouldn't waste my time either.

At work it usually runs around $700 installed for a basic start/stop.

Extra options like priority door locks, rear truck/hatch open, heated seats on/door locks is extra.
