i took my 2000 Polaris trail boss 325 out this weekend and noticed that at idle the lights were really dim, about a 100rpm increase and everything got super bright, from there to WOT the lights went dim again.

so i checked the battery cables with the tester and got a max of 8v, its a 12v system.

im guessing its the stator. what do you guys think?

If you want to go with your own diagnosis, replace the alternator. The stator is integral to the alternator.
If you want some real diagnosis, check the regulator. I would say it is brushes, but the problems occur at high rpm as well as low, but not in the middle.
Sometimes the regulator is part of the alternator.

Quads don't have altenators they have a magneto and a stator.

I would check the resistance through the stator coils and check to make sure none of them are grounded.

If the stator checks out ok unplug your regulator and recheck the voltage at the battery. Make sure not to rev the engine or your light may blow out.

deff sounds like the voltage regulator to me
