What all do I need to do a homemade doubler? Whats the cost for a doubler? how does a doubler work? etc?

would 2 1/4" plates together work to make the 1/2" needed?
 
No, it likely won't be rigid enough.
 
I know what my old case is going to do after it's removed now...
