Motor is a pretty much stock Mustang 5.0L HO. Cone filter, shorty headers, 2 1/2" down pipes collected into single 3" exhaust.
 
Do you find that the 3" exhaust gives you enough back pressure without losing any horse power? I am putting a 289 in my ranger and our 67 mustang has a 289 in it with a single exhaust system and I'm getting ready to change it and want to put the biggest pipes possible without losing hp.
 
The 3" single pipe will be fine. Just make a decent collector for the y pipe it is easy to lose power at that point. A 3" single pipe flows about what dual 2 1/4" pipes flow which is fine for a mild small V8. Just watch your muffler selection, many cheap 3" muffflers have the same internal diameters as 2.5" mufflers do. No point in installing 3" pipe to have 2.5" flow.

Also note that no motor likes or needs back pressure to make hp. Keep air velocity up and avoid large changes in cross section of your pipe and it will be a happy motor.
