I don't really think that the 5.7 was underpowered, I think that Chevy V8's just get tired really easily...
I know you ford guys are gonna cringe...

Not bad, but I still like my family's tow rig better.
Not all that pretty, but the I6 puts out just the right amount of power to be decent on gas and tow good. Would be better if it was an auto too, the stick yanks too much.

i dont discriminate between american makes, although i've only ever driven fords, as long as it's american, i usually dont have a problem with it. my uncle drove his 2000 silverado for 330K and then sold it to someone for $3000 a couple years back, still runs great last i heard. never heard of a tacoma or nissan pulling that off

Nothing is really under powered, even that 120hp 300-6, if you keep your expectations in line. The 5.8 makes the same exact power as the 5.7, and feels exactly the same driving it. They both have enough power, you just have to spin them to get it. 200hp is enough to tow about anything, if you have a gear that lets you use it at the speed you want to go. You can keep up in traffic with 6-7,000# on the hitch if you are willing to hold the engine at 4,000 rpm going up hills. Adding a hundred cubes is the trick to keeping the revs managable.
This is exactly why a diesel with a turbo is so good. You can take engine rpms out of the equation pretty much because the turbo is going to move the air instead of just the revolutions. You can make your max power much lower.

Around 12-14 if it doesn't have any weight on it or behind it. If it does then 6-8.
