Whats a good video editing/playing software?

Like the title asks, what is a good software (package) for editing and play back of video files? I have both HD and standard recorders, so I need to have one that can work with both.

What do you guys have/use?

That would be determined by what computer you have...

There is some software that works well in some brand computers but not others.

For a Dell I'd say for DVD playback anything other than Power-DVD paired with Roxio for Burning and Windows built-in movie maker is silly.

Some friends swear by Nero, I swear AT it.
(Simply installing Nero destroyed six months of work and it was an
absolute bastard to uninstall.
 
sony vegas pro is the only way to go as far as i'm concerned. ive used adobe premier, ulead media studio pro, avid/pinnacle liquid, etc. and vegas is by far the best. versatile, not too complicated, capable of doing ANYTHING, etc. it's a little pricey but if you wanna do some legit hd work, it's one of the fastest, smoothest running suites out there. seamless real time playback, not glitchy, etc. but let me just say in order to do anything other than playback in hd, youre gonna need one hell of a computer.
 
So I've been checking out some of the features on the bigger editors, and I like the Avid Media Composer 5, but that is WAY out of my price range for what I'm doing ($2,300 just for "tinkering"...I'll pass).

I was checking out the Adobe software, but it doesn't seem like its what I want. It could be there was too much available, but I went through their selector and it recommended CS5 Master Collection or the Production Premium. Thats in the price range of the Avid...and out of mine...so I'm passing on those.

The Sony Vegas Pro 9 seems to be what a lot of the people making amvs' from animes are using, and it looks quite good too. It seems to have a lot of nice features that look fairly easy for me to use, and the system requirements are easily met with my current configuration (or atleast on paper should be...). The price is a little more thatn I want to pay ($600), but so far its the ceapest one for what I want to do.

I'll poke around some more and see what I can dig up; in the mean time, any more advice/suggestions?
