Just scored this today for free, let the teardown begin!!

Gettin er done!

Messed around today a little more on the motor. Was tired cause Froggy and I went wheelin at Wind Rock with Jim B2 Guy and didn't get home till 1:00am. But as you can see I got all the pistons out and only have the cam to go. It's supposed to be able to be worked out, but I can't get it to start out. The lifters are still in and I can't get them out either. I gotta do some research on the trick to get them and the cam out. Then it's off to the machine shop. I gotta start tearing down my c4 cause my c5 would barely go today. I feel like it won't last the week.

Alright 289/302 guys, I need you help! Stuck!

Alright all you 302/ 289 guys. I need your help.
I've got what you see done now, but I can't get the damn cam out! The lifters are still in and I can get them out either. I was going to wait till I got the cam out. It will move about 1/4 inch back and forth and it will rotate, but the damn thing won't come out. I've even tried to pry it a little, but no! I need some new ideas here I'm stumped. That's all I like to have it completely tore down and sending it to the shop. They said they would do it there, but it's my damn mission now to get that thing out so I will know how to when I tear down the 289 in the mustang in about a year?

Lifters have to come out before the Cam comes out,you can get a puller for the lifters from the parts house, not expensive.

usually gunk builds up around the cam and lifters so they are hard to get out. The best way that i have found to get the stubborn cam and lifters out is to flip the block upside down, rotate the cam around a couple times so the lifters are as far out as they can be and pry the cam out with a small pry bar or screw driver. Be careful not to ruin the lobes if you plan on reusing the cam though, Once you get the cam out take a punch and a hammer and knock out the lifters since you shouldn't reuse them anyways. And dont be afraid to go nuts with Brake-Kleen, it will break down the oily gunk and make everything come apart easier.

Just lookin at your last pic, it looks like the Big end of your connecting rods need reconditioned. If you look, you can see that in the center of the rod cap that the bearing is worn, that is a sign that the rods are becoming "oval". Most machine shops should be able to fix them for relatively cheap.

If I have a cam that has made a ridge on the bearings I have a slide-hammer I just bolt in the end and tap tap it right out.

We got the cam out, the lifter slide away from the cam 1/4 inch and then you maneuver the cam out, then the lifter fall out through the center of the block. It took us about 20 minutes of sittin and staring and then it just hit us what we havent tried. His block is bare now and ready for the machine shop. Just time and money now.
