I have a 91 2.9l 4x4 manual ranger that has started having starter issues. I turn the key and the starter just whurs but I can bump start the truck no problem. This is my 3rd starter and this one has only lasted 4 days. The bolts are tight( I blue lock tighted them) and the electrical connections are good. Any thoughts?

You probably have either no power to or a bad engagement solenoid. (The part that pushes the gear forward to meet the flywheel.)

I don't think you can buy those separate at the parts store.

It sounds like you've had a serious run of bad luck with whatever brand of (I assume rebuilt) starters you're using.

BTW, the 2.9 manual starter is compatible with the 4.0 automatic starter if you can make the necessary wiring changes.

Is the 4.0l starter better? I can handle wiring ok, I was a power generation mechanic in the military

Another thing to look at is the bendix in the starter. There is a 9 tooth and 10 tooth variety. The 9 is the one you want, some starters come with the 10 tooth and don't fit right.

I pulled the old starter off, 9 teeth. The flywheel teeth look fine, but that is where "fine" ends. I really wish I had taken a picture but the teeth on the starter were all chewed up. So I replaced the starter (lifetime warranty) and cross our fingers starter 3 is the winner

I will try that, just replaced the solenoid in sub zero temps so there will be no ground cleaning anytime soon....

The 4.0 starter has a smaller body due to the use of permanent magnets which supposedly makes it more efficient.

Wishing you good luck.

I can't post a new topic. Can anyone help me? I'm wondering if the TPS is adjustable on a 91 2.9l. I have a CEL of a 63.... Low tps voltage

Everything I'm reading from parts houses is that a 4.0l auto has 10 teeth. Does this sound right?

IIRC the TPS on those old Rangers were adjustable, Ive just never done it. Dress warm and clean the damn ground!!! If it started fine before, I would think you need the starter that has 9 teeth.for what it's worth I had 2 bad starters on an old 93 POS (I mean P O S Jeep Wrangler...the worst, I mean WORST vehicle I have EVER , ever owned). The third was fine.
