4litre exchange

Hi I have been looking for information if all 4 litre ford engines will exchange I have a 2003 sport trac with a realy bad timing chain and I can get a 2000 model explorer with low milage for cheep just trying to see if I can use that engine it has aluminum valve cover but the sport trac has plastic valve cover both are sohc engines

Ford 4.0l SOHC engines were used in:
2001–2011 Ford Ranger
2001–2010 Mazda B4000
1997–2010 Ford Explorer/Mercury Mountaineer
2005–2010 Ford Mustang

You will remove intake from your current engine and use it on the next engine, so wiring will match up.
You may also need to swap oil pans.
A/C, alternator and other accessories may need to be swapped as well

If you get engine from Ranger or B4000 with same options you can do a full exchange

And just a heads up, the timing chain parts were redesigned around 2002/3 because of the early failure issues, so any 4.0l SOHC prior to that will have that issue, so 2000 Explorer would have the old design and be prone to early failure.
IMO, best bet would be to pull your 4.0l SOHC and redo timing chain with the new parts

1G980AB was superseded by 1L2Z-6006-BBRM which comes up as:

Ford Explorer Sport 2001-2003 6 Cyl 4.0L LHD RWD
Ford Explorer Sport Trac 2001-2003 6 Cyl 4.0L LHD RWD
Ford Ranger 2001-2003 6 Cyl 4.0L R (Ranger)
