my grandson is building a tuff truck from a 87 ranger. took out 4 cylinder and put in 2.9 will all items from other truck. Truck runs great and has lots of power. BUT the alternator is not charging. Tested old and it showed good. Test another used one and it was ok but neither will put out a charge when installed. Bought a new alternator and same thing. Most of the dash and excess wiring is torn out of truck. So I want to just rewire alternator to battery only I can not find good wiring diagram to tell me where the wires in the harness that plug into alternator lead to. The alternator has an internal regulator so there are 2 plugs one at regulator and one lower on alternator. both have 3 wires. So how can I by pass all and wire alternator directly???

I realize that this schematic is not for your year, BUT - it does show that the light/resistor in the dash cluster has to be connected or simulated in order for the alternator to produce voltage.

You are not the first to encounter this.

Actually, after re-reading your post, you need THIS diagram (and a 50 cent 510 ohm resisitor) to make it work.

I merged two threads together so there might be something here that doesn't make sense. Sorry for any confusion but there should only be one thread for a topic to prevent duplication and confusion.
