I've go an 87 ranger withe 2.9 that has been giving me nothing but trouble since I got it. After this last bit of fun with it spewing coolant like a geyser, I've decided to swap out the motor with abother 2.9 I have in a junk 90 ranger. My question is will it just drop in with some plug or play or is there anything different in those years that would need to be taken care of?

Just plug and play.
Replace rear main seal while engine is out.

You may want to use the upper intake from the 87 on the 90 engine, it is larger, but that is users choice.

From your description the 87 has a cracked head which they were prone to.
90 2.9l has the better head design, so less prone to cracking if overheated

Remember when you are pulling out an engine the front of the truck will come up as you lift the weight off the front springs.
This can prevent you from lifting the engine out if your hoist doesn't have enough travel.
