I have a 2.9 with a dead 4 speed auto but a good manual transfer case. Is it possible to put my transfer case onto a 2wd 4 speed auto from a 4.0L ranger?

It's not that simple. The 2wd output shaft is shorter. You can bolt the extension housing and transfer case to the 2wd trans but the output shaft won't engage the transfer case. You would need to tear both transmissions completely apart and swap the output shaft over too.
