I've got the the passengers head off on the Ranger so I could drill out the exhaust manifold bolts(I managed to break off every one). I found a bent pushrod on the cylinder 3 intake valve as I was taking it apart. I ordered a new one although I can't find a cause. I got the bolts all drilled out and the head all cleaned up nd was getting ready to put it back in and I was replacing the valve seals. I fond the stem of the exhaust valve on cylinder 1 was bent above the head and that the little tower the seal mounts on was broken off completely from the bent part of the valve hitting it. Otherwise the head is perfect, no warpage or cracks.

It seems like an awful lot of money to replace the head for such a minor break. Any ideas on how to fix it? I've got most of the parts to the tower.

New head. Sorry. If you could fix the tower it would be a weak spot that would eventually fail again. And probably cost more to fix than a new head. I would be concerned with what caused the breakage and bending in the first place?

'86-'92 Ranger('86-'90 BII), but '86-'88 had the weaker heads that cracked, so '89-'92 are better to use.
Because of the cracking issue there are non-OEM heads available for the 2.9l's, although I would do both heads if I went with non-OEM

Ron is right but also some of the 89 came with the weaker heads. Look for the heads online first before you go looking around. The difference is the bolt holes top. ( the flat part of the top. One is small and roundish.. Bad .. The larger squarish is the newer version ) But you should be able to find them at a pull and save for cheap. Also look at upgrading the radiator to something a little bigger so you can control the heat issue that the b2 has.

When you pry off the bad head make sure to check the cylinder wall and the top of the piston for any more damage, just in case.

Heads already off. Pulled the head too drill out broken exhaust manifold bolts, and was getting ready to put it back on when I found the problem.
