Different? in let's say, same generation years auto vs manual transmissions 4.0 ,, thinking if I don't buy another truck project, I'm going to have to replace the rear on mine. I will check the door sticker code... Promise! (And the tag on the rear)

Axle ratios are all over the place. Certain combinations are more common, but nothing is certain until you check the code (or really, count the ratio directly).

There were multiple gear ratios available as factory options, and by and large one set of options does not preclude or determine a given gear set. The big exception to that is that the 3.08s were really only available with the 4.0, 2wd.

Always check the tag.

Will do, so, same for same year & engine may not be 8.8, 410.. I just can't believe how hard it is to find 5-speed 4.0 trucks in the early and mid 90s.

I have a 93 4.0 auto 4wd and was planning on doing the swap to manual. But; I kept up searching for same generation with manual, looking at one today, (March 27th)

I'm not following - what does the transmission swap have to do with finding a new axle?

I'd most likely find another axle assembly, If I don't find a donor truck for parts swapping fun & games :) and my truck's rear is getting very "noisy" along with other issues.

Just find a rear from any 93-2009 4.0L with proper axle code. All are the same as far as installing and fit.

Just a follow-up the truck I got in the picture is showing a 91 axle code. open 3.27 do I need LS? My truck with the automatic has LS and it's really good in the snow it pulls straight ahead at snowy intersections. My guess is it's probably okay because I'm not going to do anything that other than maybe dirt roads no rock crawling or mountain climbing LOL

Looking at the axle decoder list, I see that the Explorer had a 3.27 limited-slip rear so that could be an option "someday"
