I don't know a whole lot about transmissions, but I have a 91 ranger 4.0 4x4 5spd and a 90 ranger 2.9 4x2 5spd. Is it possible to take the transmission from the 90 and put it in the 91 at least until I can find a better replacement

Look on the Drivers door label you should see a TRANS Code, they should both have M for M5OD-R1 transmission
1991-2000 4.0L Ranger 2wd or 4wd had M5OD-R1 as did 1988-1992 2.9L 2WD Rangers

4.0l and 2.9l engine have the same bell housing bolt pattern, use the 4.0l clutch, or which ever is better, lol
I would put in a new slave, but it's not my money :)

You do have to swap over the tail shaft housing so the 2WD trans can be hooked up to transfer case

Look in this article, you will see the 2WD and 4WD M5OD transmissions side by side: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/ManualTransmission.shtml
well one above the other :)
You will see the tail shaft differences
