i have done a bit of searching but did not get "for sure" clarification. I have an '89 2.9 manual 2wd that is rusted out and will never see the road again without major money/effort. my question is, will the trans bolt up to a '90 4.0 auto 2wd for a swap? what should i expect as far as a clutch upgrade/needed parts assuming this is an "easy" bolt on swap?

thank you for your input and sorry again for the seemingly simple question.

ciao,
waltz

dont be sorry, we all have to start somewhere! bellhousing bolt pattern on a 2.9 is the same as a 4.0, so yeah itll bolt up. some 2.9 transmissions were lighter duty, and won't hold up to the 4.0, but by 89 im guessing maybe its a mazda trans. there's an article in the tech library about IDing your transmission, and that would help. as for clutch and flywheel, your 2.9 stuff will fit, but is smaller than the stuff that would have been used on a 4.0, so i strongly recommend a 4.0 clutch and flywheel, and youll also need a 4.0 manual starter (the snout is shorter than the auto starter) good luck with your swap!

Note that you can use an auto 4.0 starter with the 2.9 flywheel. My truck is setup that way right now. Almost 2 years without problems.
