Rebuilt the SOB and everything was working fine, then one day she started popping out of 5th and wont stay in! I can hold it in while I am driving, but it wont stay.

I inspected all of the gears before reassembling, but maybe I didn't notice some wear on the 5th gear counter? I did in fact amke sure that the little steel ball was in place, new synchros, new slider.

What could it be?!

Could I possibly fix the problem by adjusting the little nut on the side?

I can't remember if the 5th gear fork is aluminum or steel. I have had to replace my 3/4 fork (aluminum). it wore down and would not fully engage 3rd gear anymore. same symptom, eventually I had to hold it in gear. now I can feel my 1/2 fork doing the same thing. 10 miles later.

one leading indicator of this issue is your trans fluid will turn silver from all the aluminum.

I am not sure why this keeps happening, but I have been completely disappointed with my trans. the original Mitsubishi trans never had any issues (for 200k+ miles), and it shifted better too. I know its not supposed to be as strong, but at least I wasn't pulling it out every 10k miles to replace a shift fork.

anyway there's my rant. hopefully yours is an easier fix. but check your fluid. that may tell you something.

cheers.
