I have a 1999 3.0 Ranger 4x4 with a five speed.

I need to change the engine anyway so I would like to go to a 4.0.

Any reason why not to?

Anything extra hard about the change over?

Anything to watch for?

Would you recommend a rebuilt or a used engine.?

Most used ones seem to all have 70 or 80,000 miles & seems bogus.

Thanks guys!!

For what it's worth, a 5.0 swap on your '99 4x4 isn't significantly harder than a 4.0, but dramatically more reliable than the SOHC (or more powerful than an OHV, if you were looking at that option).

From the 4.0 donor truck you'll need
Engine
Transmission
Engine wiring harness
Engine computer
Airbox?
Radiator?
Y-pipe?
A/C Lines?

Everything will swap over, but you'll need more than just the engine so finding a complete donor truck might be easier than sourcing parts from a junkyard or ebay.

My credo
Break it right the first time. Fix it better the next time.

4.0 is a nice engine, but usually going to a bigger engine is for more power, which make what everyone said about the 5.0 right. For all the work involved in putting in a 4.0 you might as well go 5.0.
