I got a 1990 ranger 2x4 5 speed and need to know which years will interchange. My tranny is stuck in 5th and I need a new one, thanks.

Check "transmission ID" in the Tech section:

http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/ManualTransmission.shtml

You've got a Mazda M5OD. Bellhousing is integral so you'll have to get a replacement that fits your engine - 2.3, 2.9, 3.0 or 4.0.

Also note you've got a mechanical speedo drive with a corresponding hole where it mounts in the tailshaft housing and gear on the tailshaft. So you're looking for a pre-94 or so (when they went to wheel-mounted speed sensors) unless you want to tear two transmissions down to swap parts!

If I don't care about the Speedo will a post 95 work?

It's a 5 speed so it's gotta be the m5od

Yeah it's 2wd so it should work out good then? Up until 2001 right?

Well, you didn't specify which engine, but based on your questions I am assuming it's a 4-banger.

If that's the case, then yes, up to 2001. Be careful in the 01 MY though, halfway through they went to the 2.3L duratec, and those are different.

I just swapped in a '96 m50d that had the speedo gear in the tailhousing.

We got a nice one out of a 96 and it had a Speedo gear in it, had 271k but I think it had been swapped, felt too good for that many miles plus the bolts weren't super siezed or anything
