A buddy of mine has a 90 bronco 2 with the dana 35 in it. He ended up blowing the spider gears and we are trying to find new ones but all that keeps coming up are for jeeps. Does anyone know if the jeep spider gears will work or where we can find spider gears? Thanks.

more or less, Ranger D35's use the 3.55+ (3.73, 4.10, etc) carrier. Jeep carriers/spider gears should work

There are some differences, there are "ABS" and "Non ABS" carriers. Stupidly enough, it seems to have nothing to do with ABS, but more just a year change. And to my knowlege it has never been narrowed down as to when. Anyways, there are different diameter "hubs" on the spider gears, the part that slides into the side of the case. But apart from getting the right diameter, should interchange. Just make sure they're c-clip ready.

Other than that, junkyard scrounging and just pull a whole new (to you) diff. Just make sure it's the same ratio. Should still be plenty around, pretty much any '91-'97 4x4 will work.

Also (though rare) be sure to be on the lookout for the smooth casted housings on the real early ones, no ribs = Dana 28, and grabbing one of those will ruin your day.

Smooth housing would be the hybrid D35 (D35 w/ D28 internals) and are only found in 4 cyl & some 3.0l '93-'97 rangers :icon_thumby:

I thought those were only on 91 and some 92 trucks, and by '93 everything was essentially phased out and all standard D35?

If I remember right they are listed as IFS or something odd like that (FORD Dana 35 IFS). I never had an issue when I was getting mine, just thought it was odd at the time (how they listed them)...

This is correct info. All '91,'92 trucks came with a true D35 regardless of engine.

'90 trucks will have either a real D35 (10 bolts on the cover) or a real D28 (12 bolts on the cover), and is based on mfg date, not engine.

'93-'97 is where the front axle chaos in non-4.0L trucks is.

As for the spider gears, if you can't find the gears themselves, a whole Jeep D35 carrier will fit the Ford D35 (might make for a good opportunity to pick up a limited-slip for it). Just be sure you check the gear backlash and bearing preload afterward, as this can vary between different carriers.
