When you pull the old engine and remove the parts you need for your new long block, keep the heads. The 89 2.9 had redesigned heads that cured some weak points that were prone to cracking. Since your block froze and broke, the heads may be trashed too. When you have the extra cash, an automotive machine shop can magnaflux them to check for cracks. Good luck on your project.

Thanks Sam. I am keeping the old block. My son wants to take it a part. I figured since it froze it wouldn't hurt anything. If he gets down to the heads I'll check and keep them if they are still in good shape

Sometimes you can find good running engines on Ebay for around ~$500

You may also have good luck searching the classifieds for a Ranger/Bronco II that runs well, but has been wrecked or has a bad transmission. You could pull the engine and put it in your truck.

I picked an 89 ranger up for $1400 with a decent engine and some other parts on it I plan on picking off it.
