I guess my question should be, what would work?

I only got the truck a few weeks ago. Its a 2007 2WD ranger, with a knocking 3.0. Its got 187000 kms (probably wrong) and I got it from a sketchy used car guy in the back woods. I traded my old car (rotten frame) for it, so it's not like I am out money.

That being said, I have been fixing it up, so the suspension and wheel bearings and brakes are all new and great.

So now, the question is, do I swap another 3.0 in, or swap to a v8?

I know I would need new engine mounts, but whats a relatively simple swap for a 2007? or are they all hard because of the PATS and other issues?

Any input is appreciated :)

PATS is going to be the thing that bites you the hardest. Get an EML327 adpater and ForScan and you can deal with that yourself.

The 97-01 Explorer 5.0 is going to be the absolute easiest V8 swap. That Explorer had the same engine bay as your Ranger and it will make the swap almost plug and play. You will still need trans, transfer case, a few odds and ends, but that will be the easiest V8.

The only thing that will be much easier is putting another 3.0 in.

Will I be able to keep it a manual? Or will it have to be an automatic with the explorer?

That will add a level of complexity. The best way to go about it is usually the trans from a 4.2L V6 F150.

Then you just have to get a tuner to delete the auto trans crap from the computer.

A V8 swap is not something done in a weekend.

The 07 Ranger adds some complications. You'll probably need to swap/wire in an earlier instrument cluster and an earlier evap and purge system.

Ford moved the '99 5.0 to a much higher fuel pressure than the '96 - '98 years so the '99 - '01 5.0 would be the simplest option for the fuel system but you might well end up without a working speed signal so that too will need to be tackled.

Getting the wiring diagrams for both your '07 and the doner will really help sorting out the electrical differences.

I'm probably going to end up just going with a v6 again :(

It was a cool idea, but maybe in the future....

Okay, off topic question, but what years of 3.0 will work with the 2007? Does it have to be a 2007, or can it be older?

And my purge valve is currently vent to atmosphere. as in not hooked up, because the previous owners cut the fuel line and zip tied it under the truck. So that's the only engine light on in the whole truck lol

Lol. It took me two weekends. :icon_hornsup:
I haven't done any V8 swaps yet, but that's usually how it goes for me.

I spend a month planning, then first weekend is to set the engine in place, then spend the second weekend hashing out the wiring things that looked good on paper and didn't quite work.

Expect for that one time when I tried some real wild wiring that did not work at all, with a setup that has spotty diagrams even with the Ford books. That took me about a month to work out.
