SPIED: 2019 Ford Ranger Regular Cab

On 08/1/2017 we (Truck Trend) got a close, albeit cloaked look at the expected 2019 Ford Ranger—but in the unexpected form of a Regular Cab work truck. The vehicle, shot here by our ace photographers, was being tested at a supplier in Michigan. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the 2019 Ranger caught testing, but this is the first time we’ve laid eyes on a dedicated Regular Cab work truck variant.

The prototype photographed has a two-door design, a first in our stalking of the 2019 Ranger. Globally, the Ranger is one of many work-oriented trucks, so it might make sense for Ford to bring this variant to the United States when it is revealed.

Further, the Chevrolet Colorado, Nissan Frontier, and the Toyota Tacoma, all of which are in the same segment as the future Ranger, are not available in this cab configuration; so in theory, Ford would be the only manufacturer in the segment to bring a Regular Cab to market. If it makes it to market.

Given Ford’s trailblazing efforts in the past, we wouldn’t put it past the Blue Oval to be at the forefront of the light Regular Cab work truck market.

The test subject was caught wearing its new front end, which will both refresh the Ranger design overseas and serve as the design for the new-to-the-States Ranger. Also showcased are the no-frills headlights; they lack any sort of C-shaped LED definition, unlike most of the Ford truck family.

The undercarriage couldn’t look cleaner, which could suggest the truck is a fresh prototype, and maybe one of the last final prototypes before production. This is all speculation of course, but the North American International Auto Show due date is fast approaching. Will Ford offer its newest truck in a bare, work truck trim? The answer could be right in front of our eyes.

Been awhile since Ford has made a rear axle like that in NA...

I think that is the same axle Dana has been supplying for the T6 Ranger since it went on sale everywhere but here. Not sure how well it compares to the 9" Ford but it certainly looks similar from the outside. One major difference is that the axle tubes appear to be upper and lower continuous stampings welded along the horizontal seam as opposed to the welded in tubes of the 9". This design should be capable of carrying more weight but is probably a little more expensive to produce due to the extra welding.

Looks like they haven't changed the shock mounts in 30 years.

I wonder if they'll let me buy a frame and drivetrain, so I can put my '89 Ranger Body on it. That thing is hideous.

Ring Gear 226mm (8.9")
Axles Splines 32t 34.6mm (1.36")
3.31, 3.55, 3.73, 4.70 & 5.30 ratios.

Think more Dodge 8-3/4" or Toyota 7.8 than Ford 9" - only 2 bearings. It is certainly rated higher in T6 Ranger - 1,850kg (~4,075lbs) I would expect to see this drop approximately 25% for North American ratings based on Colorados rating in Australia versus here.

Axles Splines 29t 31.5mm (1.24")
Rated for 1,480kg (~3,250lbs) (Ditto down rating for North America)

For reference Dana 35 is 192mm (7.5625"), 27t 28.6mm (1.125").

I always thought the Texas State Fair was thee place to do truck introductions. And the Oct/'18 version would be where the '19 Ranger was unwrapped.

Great info. I wonder what the torque ratings are for those axles? Hopefully they can handle the 400 lb ft of the 2.7L EcoBoost V6...

Most auto sites are speculating that the 2019 Ranger will be shown first at the 2018 NAIAS in Detroit in January.

3.2 TDCi makes 470Nm (~345ft.lbs) and the 6spd manual has 5.441 1st (auto has 4.171), so I figure the input torque max (cont) is about 2k ft.lbs. Which would put it touch and go behind the 2.7 Ecoboost/10R80. (Does match nicely with the 2.3 Ecoboost's 350 ft.lbs. though).

My day dream - Regular cab/6' bed (not the 7' pictured)/Ecoboost 2.3/6 spd/4x2. It's the updated match for the '98 I gave my daughter. And it's not as unreasonable as one might think - the Everest, I mean Bronco, will be built on a frame that is almost the exact same amount shorter than the difference between boxes.

Ugly indeed.

Personally, all of small pickups coming out now look the same to me... Not good. Glad my '92 is still truckin'!

Ugly is the right word. I would have gone retro instead of euro. I hate the euro look because all vehicles going to that style look the same. Plastic bubbles. Nothing to set them apart from another except the badges.

I tend to think it's more ricey than Euro. I also think Ford is targeting the millenials, who just love anything ricey. Just my narrow minded opinion.
I do know, Ford would have to do something in the looks dept. before I'b buy one.
I'm so in love with the rice look, I'm rebuilding the bed on my '04 Edge, maybe it'll last more than a few years more.

Reflector headlamps in 2019? Seriously? I'll keep my 05 FX/4 that is all mine and only has 153K on the clock thank you very much.
