Hi
I’m in need of a transmission for my 86 Ranger, or am looking at taking mine in for some expensive repair.
I found a 90 Aerostar in the bone yard with a grey painted A4LD. The case is cleaner than I would expect, so I’m thinking this might not be the original. I didn’t look closely at the connector that would be for the TC lockup on my Ranger, and I couldn’t tell what engine was in front of this tranny. 1FMCA11UC6LZB77343. At that to ask: is this a straightforward swap? Does this later model have too many wires?

THANKS!

Hi JavaG66,

I know that the Aerostar has the 3.0L Vulcan V6 engine because the 8th letter in that vin number is a U.

The bell housing will be different for a 2.9L vs a 3.0L.

I wouldn't think there would be any difference with the connectors, however I don't know for sure. I do have an electrical and vacuum troubleshooting manual to a 1990 Aerostar, I can get that book out and tell you what connectors go to the transmission for that year if that would help. I would have to get the book tomorrow afternoon.

Um, a 90 aerostar could have a 4.0. If it does the trans will bolt to a 2.9. However, if it has the 3.0 (most common) it will not.o

Right, but the vehicle that belongs to the VIN that was posted has a 3.0.

Thanks to all for the input. In addition to the wrong bell housing, I’m guessing that I would need a newer computer as well. I’m thinking I might have gotten all the goodie out of the truck and should move on to one a couple of years newer.:bawling:
