Hey guys,
My problem is like the title says... my rear drum brakes lock up quite badly in reverse only, and I can't figure out why. But here's some background info first.
I have a 96 2.3 4x4. When I got the truck a year ish ago the truck had just had a full brake job, front and rear. The brakes probably only have 20k miles on them now if that. I drive it almost every day, so it doesn't get much of a chance for the brakes to get crusty from sitting.
Just yesterday, I was driving with the window down and I noticed a light hissing sound from the drivers side rear drum, and I noticed that the brakes were getting a little sticky when you give the pedal a good stomp. Truck has working 4 wheel abs so the brakes wouldnt lock fully, but they were a little hesitant to release. These issues just started.
I pulled the drums off to take a look, and the pads still look ok, evenly worn and still have good amount of life. The drums also seem just fine. There isn't much of a ridge from the shoes wearing them.
I did notice that the little cable tensioner for the adjuster assembly, on the drivers side rear, had rusted and broken, so I replaced all the brake hardware on both drums. I also cleaned all the brake dust and crust that had built up on the backing plates, and sanded and lightly anti siezed all the contact points of the shoes against the backing plates. When I was all done, I went out and adjusted the adjusters in the yard by the usual method of backing up, hard brake, repeated, until the pedal felt good. Seemed just fine last night.
Today I went out and the brakes are just acting really weird. They groan really bad when coming to a full stop, the harder you brake the worse it is. But, the wierdest part is that in reverse, while braking, light or hard, the wheels want to grab violently and lock up. Only while braking in reverse. If you come to a full stop in 1st, then try to back up, the truck sometimes stalls because the brakes appear to be stuck. Yet, if you brake going forward, then start again, I don't feel that same resistance. This all seems to be coming from the rear. One side in the rear (seems like passenger side) also clunks as soon as you touch the brake pedal.
The wheel cylinders did not appear to be leaking and also seem relatively new. What gives? I know I put them back together correctly, I did one side at a time and took pictures and its not my first drum brake job by any means.
I'm about to go look and see if I find anything obvious but I have a feeling I won't. I could just go ahead and get new shoes, drums, wheel cylinders, etc., but I'd hate to spend the $ and waste it since the drums and shoes look to have lots more life left. Any help is appreciated.
