Hi, The 4.0 in my 1992 Ranger is done! I need another 4.0 and was wondering about the possibility of using one of the newer 4.0 OHV engines....something like a 1998 and up. Could I simply swap my fuel injection and accessories over to a newer block and retain my stock computer?

There are a couple of lower mile 1998-2000 era 4.0's in my local Pull A Part....but decent early 90's motors are getting scarce...around here at least.

Any help is appreciated.

Yes, 1990-2000 OHV engine swaps are almost plug and play.......almost :)

Yes, you need to swap upper and lower intakes to use current 1992 wiring harness and return fuel system
Also swap oil pump drive from 1992 engine to replace 1995 and up CAM sensor unit

1997 and up 4.0l OHV will also have an 8 bolt rear crank for flywheel/flexplate, earlier used 6 bolt so your 1992 won't fit 1997 and up crank

Info on the changes to 4.0l OHV over the 10 years is here: https://www.alignmentspecs.com/images/adjust/24.gif

Always change rear main seal on any engine when you can, its cheap and hard to get at if it starts to leak

Thank you! That is some good information! Sound like as long as I use the flywheel from the donor, I'll be fine. Do you know:
Is the timing cover and crank sensor location the same?
