Bone stock 87 Ranger 2.9 dyno

I was always curious what the 2.9 put out. While goofing around at my friends shop we decided to find out. Truck is a 2.9 5 speed 2wd truck. Ive also got a quarter mile pass in it just goofing around. 15.6@87mph

Had no idea where or even if it had a rev limiter so I let out at 5600 rpm. I dont have a tach in it. As you can see in the video power was diving fast. Figured I would post this since information on these engines are scarce

This engine / dyno run pulls good from 2500 to 4500 RPM. Just awesome for a stock engine.
Ford's 2.9L really impresses me for its displacement in a 2wd ranger.

That's not to bad since they rate it at 140 hp at the crank.....

Nice. Great baseline for the 2.9L. I'm curious what a stock automatic truck would do. If I ever have a chance I'll dyno mine, but it has a few mods. I wonder if the intake porting, aftermarket heads, and free floating rockers would help higher RPM breathing. I know the auto will hurt HP as well.

Yes. Our 1988 is basically stock but optimized for the best air flow that the stock cam, valve lift, can provide.

Spector high flow filter in the factory air box with the OEM ram air intact
86 / 87 58mm throttle body
Gasket matched from the throttle body all the way to headers including 3/8" plenum spacers
New heads ported
Aluminum spacers and honed rocker arms for better oil flow
Pace Setter headers, 2.5" Magna Flow high Flow Cat and 2.5"single exhaust

Coil, cap, rotor, wires, plugs, timing were upgraded as well as all new sensors.

All of these mods was done at the same time. The difference is night and day.

Driveability is perfect. 21 MPG average. pulls hard to 5500 rpm in a 2wd 5 spd Ranger GT Long Bed. Hauls 600 pounds of dirt bikes (2) and all the gear with ease.

This engine is great IMHO.:icon_thumby:

If anything more is wanted, put in a larger displacement engine with four valves per cylinder for a decent return on your efforts.
