Hey every one I am finishing up my parts list for a possible diesel swap and my factory R1 transmission is not acceptable for what I want to run. My question is has any one ran the R2 out of the 97-99 4.2 F150 in there ranger. For my application I need the SBF bellhousing bolt pattern but understand that the 97-99 R2s had the shift tower in a more favorable position for rangers swaps. From internet chatter it looks like pre 99 R2s also still had the speed sensor in the transmission.

I run a 96 m5r2 in my ranger behind a 302. I used the early top shift plate and made a custom shift handle to clear the dash. Works well.

FYI. In about 93 they stopped using the speedometer gear in the transmission. Ford has a speed sensor in the rear axle. So what you need is a 88-92 m5r2 and you can swap the top shift plate with a 97 up transmission.

Have pics? It has been a bugger turning up a 97-04 v6 5-speed in the 4wd flavor.

Someone told me the deal about switching the top covers so I repeated it. Twister actually tried it and the later trans cover has aluminum shift forks, the older one has thinner steel shift forks... so you can't just slap on the later top cover. Might be able to swap the shift collars and that to make it work... dunno. And maybe not all of them are that way either. I know he got burned on it it though.

As the later production transmissions had more of the running internal improvements I will simply buy the latest transmission I can get my hands on and buiid it into a 5.0 transmission case I already have...

This to make my '96 Explorer AWD 5.0 into a REAL Unicorn, a 5speed 5.0 AWD explorer

I've been down the "swap the shift plate" road and it's a dead end. The later shift plate with the aluminum shift forks will not fit on the older transmissions. I used a 1994 5.0 M5ODR2 and with a 3" body lift and the engine on steel plate mounts on top of the old V6 mounts my shifter clears the dash. Don't know how that will work out with the Explorer.

You can mod the shift stub to take a ranger shifter too.

I think there are 3 different shifter locations on the m5odr2. Early is way forward and the latest is all the way back. I got a 97 4.2 l and it's a couple inches forward of the later model shifter. I have no idea as to the top plate interchange but it's definitely something to look into. 4x4 versions are hard to find.
