So what do you know my engine in my b2 starting ticking recently. When it first happened I changed the oil went with 10w-40 and added some stp engine treatment which helped. That lasted tell now about 3000 miles or so now it will tick after driving on the highway or long drives but it comes and goes sometimes it ticks sometimes it doesn't. I changed the oil again (it was due anyway) in hopes that it would go away like last time but that's not the case. My question is where do I start what's the best plan for attack here. Would just replacing the lifters work or maybe the oil pump is getting week? I should add that this engine was supposedly rebuilt before I got it.

valve train noise is pretty common on the 2.9L. Lubrication to the top end often suffers as the engine ages and there is wear. Oil pressure is related to flow and resistance to flow. Oil pressure problems on these engines usually is the resistance side of the equation and not so much the pump. As I understand it, as the main bearings wear resistance to oil flow is reduced and the pressure drops. This in turn causes reduced top end lubrication.


I don't know how serious an issue it is. With my first BII I experienced lifter noise around 90K miles. I didn't do anything special and it went another 100K miles at which point the oil pump failed. I don't think that was specifically related to the lifter problem.

My second BII had lifter noise from when I first got it (120K miles) and had the noise for the entire 70K miles I put on that BII.

There is a poll here and 55% reported a tick with another 22% having tick just hot or cold.

I understand it to be somewhat normal and that people basically drive the wheels off of them before the engine goes. I'm not as worried about it as I was it's more annoying then anything. Also I checked the main bearings before I put the engine in they looked damn near brand new. the engine came out of a b2 that we had been wrecked right after the engine was rebuilt .
