I have an 83 ranger with 2.3 carb. 4-speed

I've replaced a few things:
Fuel filter, fuel pump, radiator, and other misc things like brakes and tune up.

It had been sitting for a while so i pulled the tank and emptied it and put new fuel in. i've also been running cleaner through it.

The problem
It dies when im using the brakes. Only after i've gone into gear (doesnt matter which gear) but when i go to slow down it loses rpm and dies. It doesnt die when its sitting in neutral and i use the brake. It doesnt die any other time (drives fine) but when i go to use the brake it almost always dies. Also ONE time it was stuck idling at 2000 rpms, but it hasn't happened more then once. I used the google machine and all i got was brake booster but if im not mistaken i dont even have a brake booster. I saw that i could buy one but when i looked after my master cylinder their was nothing so i have no idea.

PLEASE HELP!

I hate to be that guy but, could it be the driver isn't even attempting to disengage the clutch when braking?

I wonder if the clutch is dragging causing RPM loss. also Have you checked the carb?

Sounds like a ruptured brake booster diaphram

If your truck was made by Microsoft they would advise you to just make sure you put it in neutral before applying the brakes as a "work around".

Does it die while in the gear and clutch pushed in? I am thinking it must unless you are that guy who isn't pushing in the clutch.

So if you are sitting parked, brake depressed in neutral, clutch depressed you are okay? And if you then move it into gear (clutch still depressed) does it die?

I am just wondering if something odd happening related to neutral safety switch interacting with brake lights causing a ground level shift cause there is a poor ground connection.

I would tend to concur with the comment about the brake booster diaphragm having a problem, but I would expect that to be an issue in neutral too so....

The 83 should have a break booster.. The master cylinder is not designed to hold the break pressure. See if the previouse owner bypassed it . And it sounds like a seal issue or air in the lines
