Valves chatter too bad when timing is set correct ?

I can set the timing with my timing light and get it right on the 10 degree mark but the valves chatter too bad unless I back it down about an inch from the mark.
Yes, I unplugged the spout wire when using the timing light.

I cant think what would cause this rather than too much play in dist. shaft ??

problem solved. the pointer at the timing marks was bent. I used another one.
