We certainly can't assume that autonomous vehicles will eliminate all accidents. Long term, they can eliminate some of the stupid things we do on a daily basis through distraction, laziness, anger, rushing, etc.

Looking forward to hearing what went wrong here. I love the idea of being able to engage an automatic system for long highway trips, but it does scare me for around town use while the tech is still developing.

I think autonomous cars is a stupid idea. It definitely shows how stupid and lazy society is becoming.

People are to damn lazy to go to McDonalds now. They have Uber Eats pick it up for them. We live in a society of people that think they're entitled.

Autonomous tractors make more sense. Especially when you're trying to work a large field and you're trying to work a straight line.

BTW, I use to live not all that far from where Firestone tests tractor tires in Columbiana, Ohio. For years there have been driverless tractors going back and forth in a field there 24/7 testing tractor tires. Probably long before auto steer GPS.

Yes! Someone who agrees with me.

Im not a doomsday guy, but, what if some sort of crazy, cataclysmic (sp?) event were to happen tomorrow? Im going to guess that very few people anymore have any basic survival instincts left.

I guess i just cant believe that people nowadays want to be so damn isolated, yet connected at the same time that we cant even be bothered to do anything for ourselves.

Its a huge contridiction, people dont want to leave their house to go get food, shop at real stores, or hell even just take a walk, but, they have to be connected at all times with other people thru social media, etc.

I just dont get it.

Farm equipment does it down to the inch just off of GPS. Point row shut offs on planters clipping each row off neatly where they meet end rows, combines logging yield data on the fly to tell the sprayer and planter next year what areas produce well enough to justify more seed and chemicals and what areas can be backed off.

It is crazy what they can do with that... then they can do with aircraft is crazy to a whole ‘nuther level.

I am not crazy about it but it is fascinating what they can do. I think it is going to be a reality eventually.

I don't like the idea of driverless cars especially what about driving in the snow.

the grey-t escape
stephen kings "maximum overdrive" movie could become a real thing.......its bad enough that most everything is a automaitc transmission anymore, i enjoy driving and would not like to be driven by my vehicle.

do autonomous cars have a "get there now!" option that allows them to speed?

back on the original topic, the news today said no vehicle or driver could have prevented the accident. sad fact, accidents happen.

I don't know about no driver preventing accident; one sees the bike at 0:08; that leaves 2 seconds for hard left swerve, might still have trashed the bike but pedestrian (she was walking the bike and on near side) might have been missed.

Of course crossing a street in front of a car and expecting them to stop is a little crazy...

I want automated driving, but only in some areas, cities of course, and any "main" roads or highways.

I like to drive but DO NOT enjoy driving in traffic, it is boring and irritating, both at the same time, lol.

Automated systems will have failures, they will never be accident proof, after all they were built by humans :), and thats the biggest fault of all

An automated system doesn't have an "ego", doesn't have "trouble at home", doesn't have to deal with yelling kids in the car, or a PHONE CALL OR TEXT.
It knows where its going, won't cut you off, will signal EVERY TIME and NOT at the last second.
Frankly I have better ways to spend my time than paying attention when driving in traffic, let the computer do it, it can't get bored or annoyed, and unless the builder has a sick sense of humor it won't have a hand and fingers to flip off the "other guy" who pulls out a gun and shoots YOU thinking your driving, lol.

I have a bit of a different take on this. Some days, I like driving. No, I don't. I don't mind it, but to say I like it would be a stretch. It's a necessity.

I'd like an autonomous car that lets me choose. If I'm driving across my little town, or maybe driving in the city I call home, sure, I'll take the wheel. If I'm driving between where I live now, and that city, I'll let the car drive.

When I was younger, I loved road trips. I could get behind the wheel, and drive for hours. Now, not so much. Short trips across town, Yeah, I'm OK. Highway trips, I'd really rather not.
