hey guys, my new '90 ranger 2.9 i just picked up has no power whats so ever. on the highway up a slight hill floored in 5th gear at 60ish i loose speed and i barely hold it in fourth. on start up it seems to pop and chock for a few seconds until it settles out and idles fine koeo fuel pressure is solid at 38 for well over a minuet, i checked the timing and its at about 10* btc but i now realize that the SPOUT was definitely plugged in, but at idle, not adjusting it, shouldn't it not really matter..? i havent pulled the codes as of yet. any help would be great guys

Recheck the timing with the spout removed. Even at idle it advances the timing significantly.

Yes, check timing with SPOUT disabled

How many miles on the engine?
Might be worth while to do a compression test, compression is directly related to power.

Not sure if the '90 non-calif. 2.9l will have an EGR system, these actually add power if working correctly, they allow more spark advance without knocking/pinging on regular gas, but can rob power if not working correctly.

No, there is a two wire connector with a slide in contact, you pull out this contact to disable SPOUT connection.
Picture in #5 post here: http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=132369

And #2 post here: http://www.fordrangerforum.com/2-9-liter-tech/93749-1988-ranger-timing.html

The connector in #5 is shown laying on the TFI module, that is just for the picture, it is on that wiring harness but not necessarily at that location, the slide in plastic connector can be black or grey, and usually the wires are yellow.

EDIT:
Opps, you posted while I was typing, yes, it is that grey block

If it was at 10 BTDC with SPOUT working then part of your problem will be the timing.

Get that set and then see what improvement there is.

im beginning to think its a clogged cat, thoughts?
