There is a fill plug on the side. If it is the stock TK5 (Toyo Kogyo made them for Mazda) it will have two fill plugs, either one will work. They are about halfway up the left (drivers) side of the trans. One in the main housing, one in the extension housing.
What some people do is pull the shifter and pour the fluid in until it come out the fill plug hole. I just use a barrel pump.
The Mazda M50D R1 was used in newer Rangers and has only one fill plug in the main housing.

Go to your local AutoZone and buy a fluid lubricant pump for like $5 bucks.

I pull the shifter out and dump it in there, no screwing around with a sideways bottle cramped underneath the rig. Are you sure its a mazda tranny? 86 should be a FM145 unless you swapped it.

I took like 2.5 ft of clear 1/2 inch Pvc tube and slid it from inside down the shifter hole and into the fill hole. nice and clean from in the cab and no trying to squeeze a sideways bottle. Definitely 90w in the trans and diffs in those old trucks..

I've seen alot of posts about what type of fluids to put in manual trannys all witth different answers.
The Chiltons manual states "Use transmission lube SAE 80 in the 4-speed or Mitsubishi 5-speed. The Mazda(Toyo Kogyo) 5-speed transmission uses Mercon automatic transmission fluid. Use of improper fluids could lead to leaks or transmission damage."

Here's a link that goes to an on-line Chiltons manual. Login and password is Library.

What I typed above is under "General information and maintenance-Fluids and lubricants-manual transmissions".

they stoped making the tk in 87 and only the 88 and newer mazda trans use atf so 80w gear oil is the way to go. but if you ask I run 40w motor oil in mine and change it every time I change my engine oil got 500,000+ on my tranny

IMO, If in doubt, Smell the old fluid before installing the new to make sure.. Gear oil has a really bad distinctive smell to it.

try shifting your transmission with 80w gear oil in it. I'll have to go check but im pretty sure that the owner's manual calls for atf in the fm145 and 146.

The FM-145 and FM-146 are Mitsubishi trannys. The TK-5 and the M5OD are Mazda trannys.
