I purchased a 1999 Ranger 4x4 4.0 5R55E with a toasted trans. I rebuilt the unit, now it gets no second gear. All other gears work fine including 5th. It also won't perform a third gear start in the 2nd gear shift position, it starts in 1st. I have replaced all of the speed sensors, gearshift range sensor and the TPS. Took it for a ride with a snap-on analyzer and found that it skips 2nd gear, on both up and down shifts. Would anyone have any ideas where to go from here?

I think the 5R55E uses Overdrive with 1st gear for 2nd gear
1st gear has ratio of 2.47, 2nd gear is 1.86, well 2.47 x .75(OD) = 1.8525

So the shift from 1st to 2nd is the OD engaging

This gets Ford 5 speeds from what is a 4 speed trans :)

Is the OD working OK?

The valve body gasket was a weak point in these and earlier models of this transmissions, the new one should have had the gasket attached, not as a separate piece.

Thanks for posting Ron. Yes, the OD works fine, that is what has me baffled. A test with the snap-on analyzer shows all of the solenoids working properly. I believe that the previous owner drove it with a bad VB gasket until the trans fried, that's what led me to rebuild it. I also replaced the entire valve body. It's like it doesn't even get the command to open the OD solenoid for 2nd gear. The codes that I pull related to the trans were for a C1752 P0733 and P0735.

The EEC?

I'm at the point of replacing the EEC. After doing some research, I'm seeing that driving with a bad trans can corrupt the drivers that tell the solenoids to engage. The previous owner drove it until the check engine light burned out.

I guess that would be the only option left.

Finally dropping it off at the dealership today. Hopefully I'll have an answer.
