Alright guys new to this sight I'm sure I'll get some Awsome information though.
My plan for my 2005 4.0l ranger edge 4X4 is to basically change everything about it internally. Haha. I wanna swap in a v-8 make it carbureted and keep it 4x4. Is this possible or am I crazy?:dunno:

Also I'm stuck between weather I should swap in a 351w or a 302. Can anybody give me any comments or keep differences with how each will work the ranger so I can decide?:icon_confused:

A 99-01 Explorer 5.0 AWD is a bolt-in swap and the best/easiest way to go IMO!

Have a friend that's done half a dozen 5.0 AWD swaps into Ranger Edges to include his DD 01 Supercab...........

I'll agree, using an Expo doner solves a lot of issues. It's FEAD alone makes it really attractive.

The issue with using a 351 is it's deck height: The higher deck height makes for a wider package in a really narrow spot and complicates the exhaust even more.

Wiring in an older Expo 302 does have challenges with the later Rangers so I understand the appeal of a carb'd solution. Not emissions legal in a lot of places but not forbidden everywhere either.

Personally, if you want the extra cubes, I'd go with a stroked 302. You can easily get 347 cubes out of a 302 block so near 351 displacement and performance is very obtainable.

Reads like a project of Love, not of reason :)

'05 4.0l SOHC has 205HP, 245ft/lb torque
'96-'01 302(5.0l) has 210HP, 280ft/lb torque.

So swap wouldn't really have much of a net gain, not like swapping out an old 4.0l OHV, which ran 160HP.

Have you looked at rebuilding 4.0l SOHC with some "upgrades", you get a fresh engine and vehicle is still "stock" so no Frankenstein issues when getting parts a year after the swap.
Unlike the 4.0l OHV the 4.0l SOHC has quite a few options since they were used in mustangs for a few years, cams, pistons, boost, even a carb, can net HP and torque gains, same as doing it to a 302 which would be the only reason I could see to do that swap in the first place.

The 302 has more power potential than the 4.0 i would keep the efi tho better mpgs means longer wheeling trips
