Oil leak repair costs

Greetings all

Does anyone know what the current costs are to have a rear seal or oil pan gasket replaced at a shop?
I found some old post that suggested around the $700.00 range.

That sounds about right for an oil pan gasket on a 4x4. You pretty much have to remove the engine to do it. Average book time on R&R and engine is about 10 hours, with an average labor rate around $70/hour.

Just a rear main seal might be less.

5 hours for the rear main, about 8.5 for the pan. I can tell you from experience, if you can find someone who knows what they are doing, you don't have to pull the motor to do the pan. Its a pain, but it can be done.

I did the oil pan and rear main myself when I replaced the clutch hydraulics. You don't need to pull the engine to replace the oil pan if you can drop the pan a few inches. It's tight but can be done. As for the labor it took me about 2 hours and I'm not a mechanic that does this kinda thing for a living.

I'am going to get some estimates from both local shops and the Ford dealer and I will keep you posted.

My oil pan seems to be leaking too.. Got a 99 4x4 3.0l 5 Spd... How did you sneak the pan down and get enough room to drop the pan enough inches and sneak the gasket in there? What all has to be removed? I also got 31s which could help my axle clearance?? Maybe?? What do you do about where it mounts to the tranny?

$700 seems about ballpark, I was quoted $800-1000 on my 84 Bronco 2 for the same repairs, $700 doesn't sound bad.

Take that 700 and buy a decent cherry picker from harbor freight along with a nice set of lifetime warrenty Chinese wrenches and ratchets sockets and some swivels and extensions. Another 20$ for parts puts you at about 400$ In tools and parts 1ton foldable cherry picker is 189$ on sale tools are very cheap. Pay a buddy with some automotive knowledge to come over drink some beer and give some pointers.
These trucks are very easy to work on, even you can do it, have faith and invest in yourself instead of the dealer. Good luck!!!

Well in the case of my Bronco 2, the $900 to fix the rear main seal and the crank shaft seal, costs more than the vehicle is worth, so unless you do it yourself its not worth having it done. May as well buy a different engine at that point.
