He lost all the wheel studs on the corner that came apart.

I am far from an expert in such matters, but I have always had trouble putting wheels back on without studs. It's one of the reasons I try to stay away from European cars.
One word. Volkswagen. Nuff said

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.

That totally stinks any time but especially at 3:00am. It's hard to think straight at that time and in the middle of an emergency.

I think I would have tried to put the bad end of the vehicle on the dolly and continue on that way. But without being there in that exact situation, any second-guessing on our part is a bit unfair.

Well. I thought about that. But without having driveshafts in the Dakota (truck that was being towed) it would have been a pain in the ass to get on the tow dolly.

That and without having a wheel, I wouldn’t have a way of securing the truck to the dolly in a way that I would be comfortable with. I personally won’t tow something unless it has straps. Chains. And cannot physically move. I can’t put someone else in danger.

you did the right thing by calling a tow truck, better safe than sorry. I don't know what year Dakota you had but I cant imagine the cost of replacing the whole hub was more than the value of the truck. but then again it is a dodge:icon_rofl:

Wasn’t so much the hub. It was being 2.5 hours away. No place to get a rim. And having to pay gas and tolls go back and forth from ny to nj. For a 500 buck truck. Just didn’t seem worth it.

It was a 2002 quad cab with a 4.7 that had bad timing chains.

The best I ever did was drove a Honda CRX (civic roadster) into a uhaul and drove the Uhaul from NC to FL. Let just say Uhaul would not have approved.
( none of ya'll work for uhaul, do ya?):shok:

But knowing when to pick your fights helps too.

I don't know if a three legged truck with a bad engine is a hill worth dying (or killing) for.

My uncle had a CJ5 for checking/fixing fences. Had a 350 in it, I loved riding in it as a toddler I guess, I very vaguely remember riding in it. He hauled it from farm to farm in his livestock trailer.
