I bought this truck back in August of this year when my girlfriend and I moved from pei to Alberta, Canada. She's a 2007 FX4 off road with 200k kms, Interior was immaculate, paint has seen better days but hey it was a good deal.

I picked up (basically stole) a d30 and d35 from a guy for 500$ a few weeks ago. They're out of a 2010 wrangler yj sport with 40k kms on them and 3.73 gears. I know I'll need to regear for sure to at least 4.10s cause that's what it has from the factory.

uploadfromtaptalk1414364671163.jpg

I also sold the ugly cap for 125$ and picked up a truxedo tonneau cover for 100$

I'm fairly certain on going around 6-7" lift on 33s with 4.10s simply because of the cost of regearing 2 axles and I drive mostly highway for work about 250kms per day.
I'm researching tons of builds and making a rough parts list. Rusty's has 90% of what I need so far. I'm still trying to decide between coils and shocks or coilovers with conversion brackets for 98+ trucks just for simplicity and cost of labor if I do have to get someone to help me out.

Not to bust your chops Ranger Steve, but are you planning to replace the 8.8 in your Ranger with the Dana 35? Because Jeep guys often sell their Dana 35's to replace them with Ford 8.8's. Its far stronger than the Dana 35. http://www.examiner.com/article/upgrading-a-jeep-s-dana-35-rear-for-a-ford-8-8
Your FX4 axle should be a 31 spline with a Torsen "limited slip" http://auto.howstuffworks.com/differential6.htm

Just curious. :icon_confused:

No no, forgot to mention that I'm trying to sell the 35. I had to buy the pair to get a decent price, worst case it will get scrapped. As far as I know I only have the 28 spline 8.8 since its not a level 2. Thanks for pointing that out!

I have a FX4 axle from an 07 from the jy and thought it was a 31 spline. Now I'm not sure. People say it is if its a level 2 only but while my donor truck had leather seats I can't recall if it had a level 2 decal on the doors.
Crap. Now I have to pull the cover. :bawling:

You can measure the axle tube too, I think 31 spline is 3.25" don't quote me on that but its in the tech library, 28 spline has smaller dia. tubes.

I've been adding to my cart at rusty's to get a rough price. Will post a list with part numbers tomorrow. I'm still not sure on what steering box to use, I think my 3 options are: A) 93-97 ttb box B) 88-9? yota box and C) jeep box

those are common boxes for a SAS, and the 80-96 f150/bronco box is better than the ranger, it has the flat pitman arm(same box as ranger), a 2wd 73-87 Chevy is also another good option, it a outside the frame rail box, and any 73-79 ford box is also outside the frame rail,

depending on yota box you have to run a 3rd u-joint and support bearing on the steering shaft..

just to give you a couple more options :icon_hornsup:

Thanks for the info! Ill keep an eye out at the jy and on our classified site.

Heres a list of stuff so far:

D30 HP 2010 JK Wrangler W/ tie rod 3.73:1 gears $250
Trac bar W/bracket (Rustys RC-TB200) $189
Jeep YJ long arm upper links (Rustys RC-CA612-JK) $230
Jeep YJ long arm lower links (Rustys RC-CA611-JK) $290
Weld on lower control arm mounts (Rustys RAM500)(pair) $59
D30 U-bolt Yoke (Rustys HD30Y)(might be able to find flange instead) $53
D30 Low Ratio carrier (Rustys 8126496) $80
D30 Reverse Cut 4.10:1 ring and pinion (Rustys D30-410R) $149
D30 Overhaul kit (Rustys R30TMKT) $80
Neapco N2-83-288X CV flange adapter (Northern Drivetrain) $117
93-97 ranger/exploder front driveshaft (double cardan) $40
D30 Calipers/brackets/pads/misc. hardware $200

Total (for now) $1737 :icon_surprised:

Minus whatever parts I sell afterward, I think I should be able to pull it off for between 2500 and 3k. Im just collecting parts for now so this will be pretty slow for the time being.

Small "update" if you want to call it that.
I picked up a 4wdrive magazine one day last week for shits and giggles and found some coupon codes for ruff stuff and tmr customs for like 10% off and stuff like that so I'm now subscribed to that! I also found diy long arms from ruffstuff for 399$ and the come with frame brackets as well, just have to weld them up myself. I'm planning on regearing the axle, get brake calipers/brackets/pads and hardware, repainting and also getting new abs tone rings either machined from the stock jeep ones or scratch built with the same number of teeth as the rangers have so I will retain abs. If anyone could enlighten me about ranger abs tone rings/tooth count that would be much appreciated!

Update as of march 28, 2015

I picked up some Goodyear wrangler duratracs back before Christmas in 265/75r16 for just over 800 bucks
uploadfromtaptalk1427555251035.jpg

I also sold the rear d44 for 500$ so I've got 0 doll hairs into the axle at the moment, as for the abs situation I'm going to use my ranger hub assemblies and graft the ranger brakes onto the jk knuckles. Should be picking up a track bar from a jk this week, saw a build thread for a guy in BC with a d30 SAS sport trac (same guy that I stole the ranger brakes on jeep knuckles) he used the stock jk track bar, cut the axle end off and welded in a tube insert and used a heim.
uploadfromtaptalk1427556535291.jpg

Picked up a couple flush mount eBay LEDs for my bumper reverse lights. Wired them with a relay so they can turn on with a switch from my switch panel, or automatically come on with the reverse lights.

Also picked up a few parts for on board air yesterday.

The input from the compressor is on the bottom of the little brass manifold on the right. The pressure switch is on at 95 off at 125 psi and has an unloader valve. Not sure what's going in the empty 1/4" npt hole, might plug it off. The 1/2" npt hole at the from will get a hose barb and probably high temp hose down to a tee at the frame, the front end of the tee will go to a quick connect chuck in the grille/bumper and the rear part will head down the frame to the tank(s). Haven't got a tank yet so I'm thinking a couple of sausage tanks, one on each side of the frame.

Little update here,
Picked up some stuff from a 95 explorer that was being parted out on Friday. The main things that I wanted were the front driveshaft and rear axle (with discs) and the leafs of course! When I got there i took a peek inside, limited trim fully loaded. So I grabbed the ohc/visors/auto dim mirror, eatc, radio bezel, and wiring harness for the visors and ohc.
uploadfromtaptalk1430081166098.jpg
uploadfromtaptalk1430081188211.jpg

Extended the wiring harness and split them into groups based on where they had to gouploadfromtaptalk1430081240573.jpg

Then I installed them yesterday! Well I actually had an ohc already and I installed it 2 weeks ago but needed to move the bracket ahead 1/4" to get it to snap into place. So I got that sorted out, mirrors hung, harness routed, and tapped into everything. The only part I haven't hooked up yet is auto headlights because I had no relays.

uploadfromtaptalk1430081434297.jpg
uploadfromtaptalk1430081444515.jpg

Then today the level 2 hook bug bit me again so I used a mapp gas torch that I picked up on Thursday, originally to use for pulling the explorer 8.8, popped the old loops off and had the level 2 hooks on in less than an hour!uploadfromtaptalk1430081598236.jpg

Needless to say it was a damn fine weekend!

Now to start working on my led fender emblems again! I forgot to post them on here but I'm working on making backlit ranger emblems (06+ I think, mines an 07 so they came factory).
Here's a few teaser pics..

Peace out for now!

Doing some more work on the emblems today, just have to get the LEDs to sit flat in behind the emblem. This is just a teaser pic, when its on the truck there should be no light leaking around the edge.uploadfromtaptalk1431218564538.jpg

Another small update. A local guy is using the same axle as me to SAS a 2000 explorer and he's got his original unit bearings on the axle! So I'm on the hunt for a wheel bearing assembly to see if the sensor will work with my abs computer.

On another note, the ranger emblem is in need of redoing... I screwed up the epoxy, half of the emblem is cured and the rest is still sticky after 15 days :( oh well, failure is how you learn I guess! On to attempt #2!

Just when I was going to update this thread I have some bad news for this project... I got hit by a drunk driver 2 months ago, just getting insurance all sorted out now. This truck is a write-off but I'm in the market for another ranger! Looking at an 06 fx4 5 speed 4.0 with 140 kms on it. Whatever I get I'll be sure to post a new build thread and actually keep it up to date!
