Greetings All.

I have been out for a while. Work can do that to you...

During my V8 conversion I have run across and interesting conundrum.

I have a 96 Ranger (former 2.3) with a 98 Expo drive train. The speedo works, the PCM is not receiving a signal from the VSS (or at least not using it, apparently in 98 the Explorer the signal from the rear ABS sensor was used and either passed through or converted in the 4WABS module.). The cruise control will only work above 60mph.

Does anyone have info that could help me? I would like to know if the 4WABS makes a conversion of the signal or passes it through unchanged or if perhaps my VSS is just old and weak.

Thank you,

Dean Kelly

Did you leave the VSS in the tail of the transmission?

If so, did you marry the gray/black wire from the engine harness to the body harness?

As I understand it, on your '98 Ranger, the speed signal comes from the ABS system and on your '98 Expo power train, the VSS driven off the transmission.

So, I think you've got two options: Divorce the speed signal between the engine harness and body harness -- would let the body do it's thing with the ABS speed signal and let the PCM do it's thing with the VSS signal.

Or, try disconnecting the VSS from the transmission harness -- that should have both the PCM and body use the ABS speed signal.

Thank you for the input.

The 96 ranger gets the signal from the VSS in the tail of the transmission.
The 98 Expo gets the signal from the ABS sensor in the rear diff through the 4WABS module ( which I dont have) i just need to know if the 4WABS module modifies the signal before releasing it to the PCM. If it does not, I should be able to patch my VSS signal straight into the PCM. that is what i have done but i do not seem to be getting a signal at the PCM. If it does modify the signal i am going to have to find another solution.

The signal should be the same, 3000 pulses per mile no matter what generates it.

Ok, based on that info i will replace the VSS. It has enough signal to operate the speedo but not for the pcm and cruise. I will let you know how it goes.

I replaced the VSS today. All is well and the Cruise Control functions properly now.

Sweet! It's nice when the solution is both inexpensive and easy!
