The bottom bolt on my starter fell out and turns out it was due to stripped threads. since it is a blind hole, what is the longest bolt that can go in there and maybe i can get good threads. remember its metric. 1987 2.9l

The bolt is 10mm X 1.50 threads and screws into the bellhousing.

My adviceto you is to get yourself a helicoil kit.

SOME 2.9 bellhousings are "Drilled through" so you could just use a longer bolt
most aren't.

when mine stripped out, i drilled it straight through and put a long 3/8" bolt with a nut on the other side. it makes it so much easier to do service on the starter. i only wish i could drill the top one through also.

Planning on doing a helicoil, just wanted to wait till i got back to work on Friday to pick one up. Napa closed tomorrow, and I can find a bolt almost anywhere. Since Helicoil kits are so damn expensive.

permatex and loctite sell a kit called, (form a thread), that consists of two tubes of a special liquid ingredient that forms new threads, once it's mixed together and applied to your area of stripped out threads... it forms super strong new threads, as I've used, before, for repairing stripped out threads and it worked great...

The other day I started the truck to warm it up, turned it off, then when I tried to start it again the starter just spun, not touching anything.

Went under the thing and noticed the starter was loose, the only thing holding it down was the lower bolt (with 4! pressure washers).

Anyways, with the info you guys gave me 10mm x 1.5mm and measruning without taking the bolt out. I went to the nearest bolt store and got my self two 30mm, two 40mm and two 50mm (they are cheap and you can never have too many bolts).

long story short. I used both 40mm bolts. Managed to get a pressure washer on the lower bolt, but no so lucky on the top bolt. It works great now.

What is it you're referring to as a 'pressure washer'? A lock washer?

Yes! sorry about that, I just did a literal translation from what we call them in spanish...

I was referring to "Split washer or spring lock washer" ( I googled it)
