My credo
it is what it is
what would be the adequate ratio for a 91 4.0 running 33's?

4.56's will work great. I ran a 4.0 and 33's for years and it didn't feel underpowered.

If you are looking to do a lot of crawling, then 4.88's may be a better choice.

My credo
it is what it is
no crawling for this one. just a resto and small lift with tires. beach truck/weekend cruiser. 488s would be way too deep im assuming? truck hardly sees over 65mph

Well FWIW I have 32's on my truck with a factory 3.73 gear ratio and it still feels pretty good. Might be able to get away with that on an older 4.0 with a 5 speed, if not 4.10's would be good but you'll be buzzing pretty good RPM's on the highway. Guess that depends on how much low end grunt you want out of it.

Tech pages say 4:10's with 32-33's would be closest to being stock.

With 4.10's at 65mph in 5th w/33's you'll be doing 2144rpm. Switching to 4.56's you'll be at 2384rpm. So a difference of 240rpm.

My 302 Ranger does 2433rpm at 65mph. It doesn't bother me. My car does 3350rpm at 65mph. And it has for the last 200k miles.

I have 4.10s and well-worn 33s (about 31.5") on my '94 4.0L and still wish I had 4.56.

Definitely go 4.56.

My Ranger came from the factory with 4.10 gears and 31" tires. I was able to use 32" tires with the 4.10 gears but it was marginal off-road. Going to 33" tires would not have worked for me off-road with the 4.10 gears. I switched to 4.56 gears and the work very well with the 33" tires off-road.

You could split the difference and go with a 4:30 gear, I think that's what I am gona put in mine 3.73 now w/32 is weak

That would work with 2WD but they don't make 4.30 gears for the front differential. At least they are not available for my 02.

Had a Spartan locker in the rear for 3 years now, works great other then the usual bangs, crashes and lurches lunchbox's do occasionally . I had 4.56 with 33's which was great but led me to buy 35's which it works fairly well with.
